![]() Book Review “No Sweat” by Michelle Segar What is it about? : Motivation and Exercise Why should I read it? : Because it will change your life for the better Now that title sounds promising already, right? In the book “No Sweat”, Michelle Segar sheds light on a very interesting topic: What motivates people (or doesn’t) when it comes to exercise and how can it be sustainable. All my life I have wondered about exactly this. Especially, working in the fitness industry, this is what I have to deal with every day. I see people succeed and I see people fail, and I could never quite figure out why. This book offers simple answers to seemingly complex questions I had for a very long time and I am more than happy to fill you in on this not so little secret. What struck me most is that according to studies, people who have a certain goal in mind, for example “losing 5lbs”, end up exercising less than people who have different motives and goals. The reason for that, is the fact that once the person loses the 5lbs, they usually stop exercising because the goal has been achieved. This leads to a cycle of activity/inactivity and a lot of frustration in the long run. People who have a different mindset and want to adopt an active lifestyle long term, set goals like “feeling more energized at the end of the day” which leads to an ongoing motivation to move. Another important part of the book deals with our relationship with exercise. If a person has experienced exercise as something bad or as punishment, they are less likely to implement it on a daily basis. Obviously, who wants to “punish” themselves every day? If you are not sure what I am talking about, it is the “I have eaten one cookie, now I need to run on the treadmill for 30 minutes” mindset.. we have all been there ! A lot of people’s minds work like that and they live under the impression that if you don’t work out until you drop dead for at least an hour, it also does not count as “exercise”. On the other hand, she also explains that if people have a good relationship with exercise and they have fun doing what they are doing, it will not take energy out of them, in fact, it will leave them more energized and wanting more. This is the ultimate end goal : Find something you like doing so you can keep doing it for a long time.
