3 Ways To Grow Your Own Food
There is something very gratifying about watching something you have planted grow. It's a bit like playing god! I sit in front of the plant pot everyday and tell myself: "I have created this life!"
Jokes aside, it's neat to watch something grow - it gives you a sense of independence and accomplishment.
If you have a great big garden, get out there and plant something! Playing in the dirt has been known to increase feel-good hormones in our bodies, like the ones you get from running - just without the running part.
If you don't have a big garden, here are some ways to still get that great feeling of accomplishment:
1) Try putting food scraps in soil. Some plants are known to re-grow if put in water or dirt, such as romaine lettuce, green onion, celery, carrots, leeks. Some can be grown from seeds like tomatoes, peppers and oranges/lemons.
2) Start a herb garden. Pick your favourite herbs like basil, thyme, oregano, parsley, chives and put them in a pot. It won't take up much space and makes your salads and other dishes so much more flavourful.
3) Get a community garden space. If you don't have any space at home and you are also looking for a great way to get out more, check if there is a community garden space available near you. This also gives you the opportunity to get to know like-minded people who can give you a tip or two on how to grow your plants (and food) successfully.
Knowing where your food comes from and learning to sow with the seasons is a lovely way to re-connect with nature and gain a new appreciation for our food. Happy planting!
