What is it? The amazing thing about our bodies is the fact that they are able to tell us exactly what we need. We simply just forgot how to listen. ‘Intuitive eating’ means listening to, and letting, your body decide when it needs to eat and what it wants. It’s all about a creating a healthy attitude towards food, which should be viewed as something positive and nourishing for your body. There are two reason why we eat: physical and emotional. Unfortunately, the physical signs (the real signs of hunger) are mostly overruled by the emotional - boredom, loneliness and stress - which create cravings for sweet or salty. Here are a few tips on how to tune-in to your body and build a better relationship with your food: 1) If you want to eat, check for physical signs to tell if you are actually hungry. Signs of hunger include a growling stomach, irritability or fatigue. If you don’t have any of those symptoms, check-in with how you feel. 2) Make sure to eat ‘real food’. If you eat too much junk food without any nutrients in it, your body will crave food until you fulfill that nutrient deficit. 3) Find ways to cope with emotional stress. Eating is a way of dealing with emotions, however, not a very good one. Maybe try journaling, talking to a friend or family member or going for a walk. If you would like to learn more on how you can practice intuitive eating, stay tuned for more info on my new service starting in September.
