It's Ok To Rest

Whenever I take a week off, I have the best intentions to rest and recharge my body. When you have a million side projects, however, this becomes a rather difficult task. We decided to visit our property on the island for our birthdays in order to take a week off and relax.
Have you ever tried to relax in the midst of a construction site?
Well, the busy-bee in me always wants to improve things and has a hard time not doing anything as it is but when deer eats your raspberries, you just have to build an enclosure to keep the remains safe and so it starts: Oh wouldn’t it be nice to have a small pond for the birds?…oh shouldn’t we just repair this one small thing while we are here?
Needless to say, the holiday was lovely but not much of a break from our everyday scheduled lives. And on top of that, whenever we come back, we have to catch up on laundry, shopping, work and it feels even more stressful than before.
Coming back this time was different: A few days after returning to the city, a crazy heat-wave reaches Vancouver and I find myself reading my Kobo on the couch, sipping an iced coffee and eating fruit. My body went into this lovely state of surrender and ease.

Wait a minute… that’s what it took? A heat-wave - to finally give myself permission to do nothing and just relax. For the first time in a very long time, I felt ok and at peace just sitting on the balcony enjoying life. No projects, no to-do list, nothing that can’t wait until the heat passes. It was an eye-opening moment and a lesson, that we shouldn’t wait for extreme external factors to force us to stop and take a break. The benefits of just letting life unfold and not planning anything for two days felt better than most of my two-week holidays. Hence, I have decided that it is ok to take a break and we shouldn’t feel guilty and pressured to always be productive. Most of the time, we are actually more productive and creative when we are well-rested.
The heat was a blessing in disguise ! Now, how about that rain…. ?!
